The Journey to the Cross – Lent 2020 series

Series Key Verse: I want to know Christ and experience the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in His suffering, becoming like Him in His death, and so somehow, to attain the resurrection from the dead. Philippians 3:10-11

Title: The Cross of Suffering

Scripture Text: Mark 8:31-37 31 Jesus then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” 34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness
4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'”
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard

20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. 3 “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4 He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ 5 So they went. “He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. 6 About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’ 7 “‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. “He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’ 8 “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’ 9 “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’ 13 “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ 16 “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

1 Peter 2:20 - 25

But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 ‘He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.’23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 ‘He himself bore our sins’ in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; ‘by his wounds you have been healed.’ 25 For ‘you were like sheep going astray,’ but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

We Were Created To Be Like Jesus Christ

Ephesians 4:17-32

17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed. 20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 “In your anger do not sin”[a]: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need. 29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

1 Corinthians 12:12 -27 12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptised by one Spirit so as to form one body – whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free – and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 And so the body is not made up of one part but of many.15 Now if the foot should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,’ it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,’ it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’ And the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you!’ 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honourable we treat with special honour. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honour to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it The themes are - unity, family, praise, and suffering.

Ecclesiastes 1: 12- 18 Solomon writes: 12 I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind! 14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.15 What is crooked cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted.16 I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind. 18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief. Joshua 3:1-5 3 Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. 2After three days the officers went throughout the camp, 3giving orders to the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. 4Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits[a] between you and the ark; do not go near it.” 5 Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you.” If you have been touched by this message but have never invited Jesus Christ into your heart, today is the day of salvation dear friend. Scripture: (Matthew 1:18-23). “18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us.” (Matthew 1:18-23).

God with Us Brings Peace

Scripture reading: Luke 2:8 – 20 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Summary: Is peace possible at Christmas, I wonder if it was really peaceful on the 1st Christmas?

God with Us Brings Joy

Luke 1:5-25 New International Version (NIV)
The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.

8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.

11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”

19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”

21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.

23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”

Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[a]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[b] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[c] because he will save his people from their sins.”

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[d] (which means “God with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Themes: Love, the love story between Joseph and Mary, the agony of seeming betrayal, the comfort of the angelic message, and then culminating in the love story of God's love for us.

God with Us Brings Hope

Isaiah 61: 1- 3. The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.

The themes are - gratitude, hope, freedom, love.

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

We are looking at principles of peace with God, others and the world. We will also look at peace through food justice - Interesting!

SUMMARY:

You are gifted by God to serve God.

Scripture reading: 1 Corinthians 12:1 - 11 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years,[c] but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. 45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” 47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” 49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.” 50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” 51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.” 53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

13 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash each other's feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them."

The Keys of The Kingdom

Scripture: Matthew 16:13-19

Jesus was talking with His disciples in Matthew 16, asking them what they had heard about who He was. They had a variety of answers of what they had heard, but then Jesus gets more personal and asks them directly – who do YOU say that I am?

Peter, inspired by God, answers correctly that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and Jesus then tells them all that this truth is what He would build His church on – the truth that Jesus was and is the Son of God.

He then tells them that based on their understanding of this truth – this rock – that He would give them two special keys: one would loose the power of God on earth, and the other would bind up the power of God on earth. Both of these keys are available still today – we have the power to set heaven’s power free on earth or to bind it up. When we live our lives based on the rock of truth that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, then these two keys are in our hands.

29 The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.
30 Light in a messenger’s eyes brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.

"Dear God, I admit that I am a sinner, that I need a saviour, and I believe that you send your only Son, Jesus Christ to live in this world to teach me the way I need to live. I believe Jesus died on a cross to pay the penalty of my sins. I believe he resurrected from the dead , and gives me forgiveness for my sins and eternal salvation. I believe Jesus Christ is God in the flesh as your Word declares it in the Bible in Colossians 1:15-19

"15 Jesus Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,16for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.

Everything was created through him and for him. 17He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. 18Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead.f So he is first in everything.

19For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, 20and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross."

So, Jesus, I accept you as King over my Heart, as my personal Saviour and I pray for you to please give me the new Spirit you promised to make me a new person. I know you will work in me from now on through all the days of my life. I believe what your Word says that "I am certain that God, who began the good work within me, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns." Thank you Jesus for your salvation and for making me a new creation!

What does the Lord require of you?

Some thoughts about this message from our guest Speker, Tom Neufeld:

"This, of course, is the famous line from the lesser prophet Micah. The message of the lesser prophets reminds the chosen people to stop exploiting others and to do justice. It's like they are contemporary western citizens from our time!

The others texts will tell the story of Joseph revealing the truth of Phaoroh's dreams and Jesus feeding the 5000. These stories direct our thoughts to the action that inspired CFGB to be created out of a group of MCC operatives in the 1970s.

My hope is to stimulate us all to think about how we can become action figures who respond in service to Christ's model as opposed to being sales agents who market the gospel. Servanthood living is the best way to demonstrate the love of Christ and be faithful Christians. I actually met Mother Teresa in Calcutta once, and she said to us, "spread the gospel; use words if necessary." We should be doing the Christian life and not talking about the Christian life. This is discipleship.

Another hope is to engage the congregation into supporting the local CFGB Grow Hope initiative in Campden. I think it would be great to have people come out to see what MCC/CFGB is doing locally and how they can be part of it. (September 15/19 is the celebration day at the Dyck farm in Campden.)"

Scripture Proverbs 4:1-9 (NIV)
“Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction;
Pay attention and gain understanding.
I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.
When I was a boy in my father’s house,
Still tender, and an only child of my mother,
He taught me and said: “Lay hold of my words with all your heart;
Keep my commands and you will live.
Get wisdom, get understanding;
Do not forget my words or swerve from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;
Love her, and she will watch over you.
Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Esteem her and she will exalt you;
Embrace her, and she will honour you.

This message centers around six ways to gain more wisdom

1. Study the scriptures

2. Spend copious amounts of time in prayer

3. Listen to your life

4. Surround yourself with wise people

5. Learn to ask more questions than you give answers

6. Ask for wisdom. Ask from God.

Genesis 27:25-34 25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.” Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.” 27 So he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said, “Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed. 28 May God give you heaven’s dew and earth’s richness— an abundance of grain and new wine. 29 May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed.” 30 After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, “My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.” 32 His father Isaac asked him, “Who are you?” “I am your son,” he answered, “your firstborn, Esau.” 33 Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!” 34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me—me too, my father!”

He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,16for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.

So, Jesus, I accept you as King over my Heart, as my personal Saviour and I pray for you to please give me the new Spirit you promised to make me a new person. I know you will start to work in me through all my life, changing me from the inside out. I believe what your Word says that "I am certain that God, who began the good work within me, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns." The king had granted him everything he asked, for the hand of the Lord his God was on him. 7 Some of the Israelites, including priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers and temple servants, also came up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes. 8 Ezra arrived in Jerusalem in the fifth month of the seventh year of the king. 9 He had begun his journey from Babylon on the first day of the first month, and he arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month, for the gracious hand of his God was on him. 10 For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.

Our tongues direct our lives, they can destroy our lives and the lives of others, and our words show what is our hearts.

SCRIPTURE: James 3:1-12 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. 3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body,sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

There’s no magical handbook for how to be a successful adult. We are all just doing our best to make good decisions and deal with things as they come along. Researchers from Cornell University found that adults make an estimated average of 226.7 decisions each day just on food alone and it’s estimated that the average adult makes about 35,000 remotely conscious decisions each day.

James tells us that if we lack wisdom – if we need it – we should ask.

"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt." James 1:8-9a

"Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart. I will be found by you declares the Lord. Jeremiah" 29:12-14a

"So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life – and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well- adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you." Romans 12:1-2 (The Message)

James 5:7-12 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.

Three things we find in the fact that Jesus is Alive - life, love, hope,

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:14-23 New International Version (NIV)

14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.

20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.

Summary: Three things we find in the fact that Jesus is Alive - life, love, and hope.

Jesus is friend of sinners, and that is a good thing, for each of us is a sinner, and if we are to be like Jesus, we need to befriend sinners also.

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 ‘We heard him say, “I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.”’ 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, ‘Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?’ 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.

Creation and Humanity - Footsteps of Faith Series - Lead Pastor Dr. Rob Patterson

" If I asked you the question – you are Mennonite brethren – what do you believe – about

1. God
2. The church
3. Baptism
4. Discipleship
5. Marriage, singleness and family
6. Work, rest and the Lord’s day.

I suspect that you would say – well pastor Rob, I believe what the bible says – that’s a good answer. Now, what does the Bible say about – God, church and these other things. It says a whole lot. Thankfully our Mennonite Brethren leaders have written a “confession of Faith” – a book that helps us understand what we believe. I want to know what I believe – I want us to be strong in our faith, and I want us to stand firm on Scripture, I want us to know what we believe. My job is to create mature, strong – faithful, brilliant Christian brothers and sisters.

So, over the coming months we will be looking at the core of our faith – We are calling it the footsteps of faith – following in the footsteps of Christ
Today we will be looking briefly at our role – humanity’s role as God’s creation.

Our MB “Confession of faith” book says. “Humans are the crowning act of creation, were are designed to live in fellowship with God and in loving and helpful relationships with each other. God created us male and female in his own image. After creating us, God gave us the mandate to rule and care for creation as a sacred trust and the freedom to obey or disobey him. Through the wilful disobedience of Adam and Eve, sin entered the world. As a result, human nature is distorted and people are alienated from God and creation. Creation is under the bondage of decay. Humans and all creation long to be set free. say “Sin, guilt, or death did not prevail. God is creating a new heaven and a new earth in which there will be no evil, suffering, and death. The first signs of this new creation are already present in those who accept God’s forgiveness through Christ. In Christ all things are being reconciled and created anew.”
But this is not the end of the story – we are set free.

We find it in Philippians 2 "Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.

The key words are "work out" and "work in".

Work out is our part. Work in is God's part. We are to work out what God is working in.

So yes - we are people of God, he has chosen us, but we also have some work to do to live out our faith.

This doesn't say "work for" your salvation. It says "work out" your salvation . The Bible says "Salvation is not of works, lest any man should boast." The scripture in Philippians is written to Christians. And he is telling Christians to “Continue to work out your salvation”

God is saying develop what you already have. If you're born again, keep growing. Work it out. None of us are “done”. Our salvation continues to grow – if we remain alive in Christ.

What do you do in a physical workout? You do a workout not to get a body but to develop the body you already have. When you work out a puzzle, you already have all the pieces. You've just got to put it together. When we work out our salvation – we all ready are saved, we have what we need, but we are maturing, becoming stronger.

Paul says, "...work out your salvation..." Focus on the word "your". He's talking about an individual assignment. We are responsible for our growth. Our salvation, not somebody else's. Yours. Individually. God wants to work out the implications of faith in your life.

Your faith is important to God – it is your responsibility. I am your pastor and teacher, but I can’t make you grow, I can’t make your learn – it is up to you to listen – read – learn and grow.

Every person who is a born-again believer starts life as a baby in Christ. Whether the new convert is six or sixty, that person is still a new Christian and needs to grow in the Lord. A baby Christian who has been saved for forty years is a tragedy. God intends for us to grow and mature so that we can be a positive influence in the lives of others.
Take your salvation seriously; it has eternal implications. It's a life or death issue here. Nothing is more important than your own spiritual growth. Take it seriously.

"...for it is God who works in you..." That's God's part. Think about that word - "works". In the original language – Greek the word is energien. We get the word "energizer" or "energy" from this Greek word. God is the energizer for change in our lives.

He says, "I will give you the power to do what you want to do, need to do. I will empower you, energize you." God is the energizer to will and to act. He will give you the will power and the ability to grow and change.

There are three key things that God uses to change you, to energize you, Sometime these things hit us like lightning and sometimes they slowing change our nature.

The first Key is the Bible – God’s word
He uses the word of God, the Bible to change us.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says "The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. It is God's way of making us well prepared at every point..."

1. God puts His Spirit in us. This is where the power to change comes from.

Slide 11. Romans 8:11 says "Once the Spirit lives within you, He will bring to your whole being new strength and vitality."

2. God changes us through circumstances and people

God choses to use everything in our life to teach us. Some people say that in my happiness and joy – God whispers to me – but in my struggles and pain he shouts.

Slide 13 Romans 8:28-29 "To those who love God and are called according to His plan everything that happens fits into a pattern for good. For God chose us to bear the family likeness of His Son."

3. He's more interested in our character than our comfort.

Hebrews 5:8 "Jesus learned obedience through suffering."

Please be sensitive to the work of the Holy Spirit within you. Discern what is right, and move according to the work of his Spirit in your inner being.

And lastly ask God, what are you trying to change in me through the circumstances I am experiencing. What are you saying through my pain, through my challenges, through my circumstances.

What do we believe about Humanity – about how God changes and grows us. We believe that we are God’s children and that he is changing us each and every day through his word, his Spirit and the circumstances of our lives. "

Thanksgiving, Joy and Compassion - Harvest Mission Fest Message - Lead Pastor Dr. Rob Patterson

Inspired on Psalm 67, Pastor Rob Patterson takes us through a journey 12 thousand kilometers journey to Kenia where he served as a Pastor in Mathare.

"The church is just a shack in the Changaa district. The church is used as a school during the week. The church is made a thin wooden sheet that over time have become covered in grime. There is no ceiling but the roof is made from old metal sheets that leak whenever it rains. As the service starts people slowly drag themselves in. The church is full of street kids when you start, they just want to follow the white folks around to see what they are up to. So they follow us into the church and sooner or later loose interest and slip out.

The people come to church in whatever clothes they have. The women are usually in a dress or a wrap around piece of cloth called a Lesoo or a kanga, and the men have mismatched pants and jackets, they come looking really good, wanting to wear their best for Jesus.

They come to sing and praise. They come and are thankful for all that they have. For their children and their families. For the roof of tin or plastic that covers their homes. For their health, and for the food in their stomachs. They pray for people who have no clothes, no roof and no food in their stomachs.

These are a thankful people – they love life, they love their families, they even loved Sarah and Me. They game me a name – because they don’t have an Rob for Pastor Rob – they took a month and decided to call me Macharia – it is like curious George. They are so poor, but so rich, they have little but are so grateful for what they have.

Psalms 69:30 (NIV) says: "I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hoofs. The poor will see and be glad-- you who seek God, may your hearts live!"

As I look around I wonder how much you have to be thankful for this morning. For your children and your families. For the roof over your head, for warmth, telephones, running water, garbage pick up. For your health, and for the food in your stomachs.

So, as the scripture in Colossians 3:12 says, let's clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

As we celebrate harvest mission Sunday let us give with grateful hearts. Grateful for God’s love and care for us. May we have hearts of compassion for the needy and the poor in Canada and around the world."

I think within each of us there is a desire to have a stronger faith, and a deeper walk with God – and we are blessed to be able to look at the lives of others, and see what it was that enabled them to do just that
In 2 Chronicles 27, we read this about King Jotham: “So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the Lord his God.”

There is still a blessing today for those who will set their hearts to seek after God. Jeremiah 29:13 says “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
So we ask these questions: Do we prepare our hearts to seek the Lord?
Do we prepare our hearts for His presence?
For His house?

What is it that we do to make sure that our hearts are ready to receive the precious Word of God?
When you prepare your ways before the Lord, and you come to service ready to give of yourself to worship and the Word, what you get back in return is so much more than you could have anticipated.

Taxes. What’s the big deal, right? We might not love it, but in 21st Century Canada, we know that we pay taxes on our income, the land we own, and on things that we purchase so that our government will be able to provide things like healthcare, infrastructure, education, and social welfare. Whether we like to admit or not, we do benefit from the work of our government that is funded by the taxes we pay.

Israel during Jesus’ time was not a free a country, like Canada, they were had been conquered by the great Roman Empire and were a dominated and oppressed people. Part of what that meant for them was that they were heavily taxed by Rome and the taxes they paid didn’t go into a system that would ultimately benefit them and their families, it went into a system that allowed their wealthy and indulgent oppressors become more and more wealthy and indulgent while they were left living in abject poverty.

Jewish tax collectors were not very popular or well-liked by their fellow towns people because rather than fight this system of oppression, they supported it and benefited from it at the expense of their own people. They were hated and reviled for working for their Roman occupiers and for charging even more than required so they could pocket the extra.

Zacchaeus is a chief tax collector and he’s wealthy. He is not a person we would prop up as someone to aspire to be like. He’s a traitor to his people and to his God. He’s deceitful and steals from his own oppressed people. He is wealthy and living in stolen luxury while his fellow Jews struggle in poverty. There is no way around it. Zacchaeus is not a good man.

And yet, for all of that, Zacchaeus hears that Jesus is coming through Jericho and he wanted to see who Jesus was. We aren’t told what it is that makes Zacchaeus want to see Jesus. Maybe he’s heard that Jesus welcomes sinners and tax collectors like him. And maybe this sparks a thought inside of him that says, maybe, just maybe there’s hope for him. The Bible tells us that, "when Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.’” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. (Lk 19:5-6)

Praise God! It is the lost and the broken, the ones who have turned away, that Jesus is looking for. This gives hope to us all, because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We all need Jesus!

Maybe you gave your life to God a long, long time ago, but so much has happened since then. Maybe you’ve made choices that you knew weren’t right and that you knew weren’t what God wanted and at this point you’ve walked so far away from God that you’ve given up all hope. You could never be worthy of his attention.

If this is you, then I hope that the story of Zaccheaus will ignite a spark of hope in your heart. Jesus didn’t come for the healthy, he came for the sick and the lost and if that’s you, then please hear me when I say, there’s hope for you. If you will have the courage to come and see, to meet with Jesus then you’ll see that it’s all true. God loves you and welcomes you. He welcomes you to come, accept his sacrifice, turn from your old ways, and follow him.

Throughout the book of John we see Nicodemus go from a skeptic to an open follower and disciple of Jesus. When Jesus meets with Nicodemus he explains second birth of the spirit and how to receive salvation. As Nicodemus' understanding of Jesus grew so did his courage in following him. Nicodemus means 'Victory of the People'. In that name we are reminded of what Nicodemus finally came to the understanding of: that Jesus would be resurrected conquering death and winning a victory for all people who choose to put their faith in him.

The Roman Centurion story found in The Gospel of Luke tells that that he understood a spiritual principle that most people do not. He understood what authority was and how it operated – both in the natural and in the spiritual.

This Centurion was a Roman soldier – part of a fighting force that was ruthless and decisive – Rome ruled with a rod of iron. He would have been in charge of 100 soldiers (a century), and would have been a part of a larger group – called a legion – of 6,000 soldiers – so 60 centuries with 60 other centurions. This man, contrary to the usual idea we have of a Roman soldier, was very compassionate – he had a servant who was ill, and was very concerned about his/her well-being

As he understood that this Jesus had authority in the natural and in the spiritual, let’s remember Jesus own statemt in Matthew 28:18 – “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

This centurion realized that the power was within Jesus Himself to change the natural order of creation simply by saying the word – he realized that the power to heal was resident within this Man Jesus, and that if He spoke the word, then it would be done

Do we believe it? Do we realize the power that is in the name of Jesus.

Something that I’ve learned about God, is that He loves using the least likely person for His work... because it gives God all the glory! If God only ever used the bravest, smartest, most obvious leaders, then people would look at them and say: “Oh, of course you did a good job; you’re super brave!” or “It’s because you’re really smart.” But when people see someone so young, or someone really scared do amazing things, it makes them stop and think: "How did that just happen?" It is only because God is working through us that we get to be a part of such incredible stories! It’s an honour and a privilege for us to work alongside God, and I think it’s rather humbling as well.

Sabrina took us through the story of Martha who had a sister named Mary. Here is an excerpt from her sermon. "I think often the lesson that we come away from this story with is that the only thing of value is to stop being like Martha and be more like Mary instead – stop doing things and start sitting at Jesus’ feet. And I absolutely love so much of who Mary is. I love that Jesus threw off the social norms that said that a woman had no right to learn from a Rabbi. Her gender did not limit her ability to enter into a space of learning and service in Jesus’ new, upside down kingdom. Jesus’ invitation and the inclusion of her were ground-breaking and that would not be taken from her. And it is absolutely important for us to take time and space away from the busyness and activity of life in order to just be in the presence of our Lord – allowing him to teach us and speak to us. But it isn’t one or the other – either we idly sit at his feet, learning in his presence, or we allow our busyness to go unchecked and hinder us from communion with Jesus. The lesson here isn’t just to stop being busy, but to always remember the one thing that is needed. To let our daily work – caring for your family, keeping house, the work you do at your place of employment, every moment of every day become holy moments where we’re sitting at the feet of Jesus in the midst of the work we do. Colossians 3:23 tells us that whatever we do, we are to work at it with all of our heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters and Ephesians 6:7 to “serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people.” God calls us each to be faithful to the gifts and tasks that he’s given to us – faithful to the specific strengths and gifts he’s placed in each of us and faithful to the specific tasks that he’s assigned to each of us. We need to let our daily work – caring for your family, keeping house, the work you do at your place of employment, every moment of every day become holy moments where we’re sitting at the feet of Jesus in the midst of the work we do. Dr. Rob Patterson challenged us with his message during our family-friendly Sunday Service in his second part of his message on the prophet Jonah. He asked: "What's is your Nineveh? Nineveh is when you walk out of your front door and you look around. There are people all around us who God loves, but who don't know him. We are in Nineveh. Nineveh is wherever you have a friend that does not know Jesus and you need to tell him about his love. We need to be Jonah, but let's not run the wrong way, let's run the right way. Invite your neighbour for dinner, can you do that? You need to build your relationship with your neighbour. Maybe you need to help someone paint their fence. Do you know anyone who's lonely? Maybe that's where God is calling you. That's what is like going to Nineveh, taking God's love to those in need. Life is not about us and life is short, so let's go to Nineveh. It is about us being obedient to God’s call and taking his love and forgiveness to a needy world.. Life is about Nineveh. Can you imagine the lives that are going to be changed? Life is not about us. Touch somebody’s life. Let’s make a difference. So, God, we ask for forgiveness for short-sightedness, help us not to be selfish but have our eyes opened to the needs of those around us. Open our eyes and we ask you to show us ‘Where is Nineveh for me? Where are you calling me to go? ‘Father, we pray that you will use us, that life wouldn’t be about us but that would be about you, your love and your forgiveness, that wouldn’t be about our comfort and self-centeredness but that you will build a fire inside us to change the world and to bring Christ across the street and Nineveh. We had a great teaching message this Sunday from Rev. Dr. Rob Patterson, who preached the first part of a 2 part message on the Prophet Jonah. Among the things he shared he said “A lot of us have something in common with Jonah. Sometimes God says something to us and it frightens us and we run. Sometimes we make mistakes and Jonah knew mistakes. But God can do something good with something that is already broken, and that’s you and that’s me. God uses broken things and we are grateful for that.” Later on Dr. Patterson teaches us three principles we can learn from Jonah, he explains “When you hear God’s voice, run. But in Jonah’s case he ran in the wrong direction. Have you ever ran in the wrong direction? So for us, if we hear God speaking (through his people, his Word, through his Holy Spirit) let’s run but in the direction God calls us to go. So, you may ask, ‘what kind of direction God ask us to go? How do we know what’s God’s direction?’ And I can tell you that you can trust that God’s direction will be is in the way of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience. He is going to send you in the direction of Kindness, Goodness, Gentleness, Faithfulness and Self Control. If you are going in that direction, you are probably going in the right direction!”

Many times we read about some of the people God used in the Bible, and we get the idea that they were some kind of spiritual giants or superhuman people. Some of them did some incredible things that we read about – miracles that would blow us away. And we get the idea that we could never do anything like that – after all, we're just us. They must have walked around with halos on their heads, or something like that. But there is something that sets some people apart from others, but underneath, we are all exactly the same, with the same opportunities and the same problems.

Elijah is one of those examples. God says this through his word in James 5:17 – 18 “Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.”

Every one of us can be an Elijah if we choose to obey God and allow Him to use us to do His work. The miracles didn't come from Elijah, they came from God – as He worked through this man Elijah – and He can work through each one of us too! Ask The Lord to use you today!

The times of Noah were a very desperate time in mankind's history – the wickedness that abounded caused God grief in his heart – to the point where we read that He was sorry He ever created man. The troubling thing today is – we are no different today. Scripture records that like it was in the days of Noah (Matthew 24:37), so shall the end of time be. We are rapidly approaching the exact same climate that saw the destruction of the world through the flood. God has promised that there will be another world cleansing – but not by water – this time by fire. 2 Peter 3:10 “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.”

But there is hope – there was then and there is now – God always has a plan, and He knows the plans that He has towards us.

As God looked over the whole span of humanity, there was a feeling of almost total despair – with the exception of one – Noah. He stood out like a shining star in the midst of darkness. Genesis 2:5 – 6 tells us “the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.” Then God tells Noah that He is going to do something that had never been seen in over 1600 years – He was going to cause it to rain, which Noha had never seen happening before. So, why did Noah take this seriously? Hebrews 11:7 – 8 says “By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith, he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.” Scripture tells us that God brought the water – the springs of the earth were opened up, and the windows of heaven were opened so that rain poured down on the earth.

The ark came to rest upon the mountains of Ararat on the 17th day of Nisan. The 14th day would later be remembered as the day of Passover. Three days past that would be the day on which the tomb of Christ would be discovered empty. The day Noah's ark came to rest was the day of resurrection – the day of new life – the day of new beginnings. So, no matter where you are in your life, no matter how old or how young you are, today can be a day for new beginnings for you!

Lord Jesus, we invite you today to walk with us, refreshing us and flowing in and through our lives. Fill us with your forgiveness and may your peace -you are the prince of peace- overflow in us no matter the circumstances we are going through right now. We trust you and invite you to use us as vessels of love to others as we act in compassion, kindness, grace and as living sacrifices bringing to this needy world the good news of your salvation.

"We often think of the people we read about in the Bible as extra special or extraordinary because some of them did some pretty amazing things. But the thing is that they were actually just ordinary boys and girls and men and women like us, living their ordinary lives for God. Josiah was only eight years old when he became king, and even though he had a really, really bad father and a really, really bad grandfather who were kings before him, the Bible tells us that King Josiah became a really, really good king! These two previous kings before Josiah, King Manasseh and his son King Amon, brought idols to the people and had them start worshipping them. Furthermore, instead of taking care of the temple where they would worship their true God, they let it go to ruin and they even lost the Book of the Law –The Bible- It takes a village to raise a child, and even though King Josiah was only eight years old, he had a small village of people who helped him learn about God and how to be a good king. Josiah loved his people and lead them back to God. Josiah's mom, Jedidah, was especially important to him as well a priest named Hilkiah. It does not matter how old or young we are –whether we’re 80 years old or 8 years old. If we follow God then God wants to use us to make things right in the world. God wants to use each one of us. We each have the opportunity to help be a positive influence in the lives of those around us. Let’s make sure that the way we live our lives and the way we interact with those around us has a positive impact on them rather than a negative one. A Family That Love God and Others - Sabrina Wiens

Our mission is to be a family who loves God and loves others. It’s important for us to be clear about the mission and task that God has given to us so we can work intentionally, wisely and diligently to accomplish it.

What are some ways that you’ve grown in your relationship with God and others? What are some areas that, if you think about it, you see that maybe you need to change or grow in when it comes to loving God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength and our neighbor as ourselves?

Everything in our world trains us and tells us to look out for ourselves – look out for number one. To fight for what we want and what’s best for us. But Jesus taught us that to be great in his kingdom we have to be last – we have to become a servant to others. In the same way, Jesus humbled himself to serve us, we are to humble ourselves and care for others.

So, let’s not become weary in doing good. Let’s stand firm in the calling that God has given to us until the day of completion. Corporately, together, let’s continue to intentionally, diligently, and wisely work towards accomplishing the task that God has given to us, so that when that day comes when we’re standing before him showing him the work we’ve done on his behalf, we can hear those words we long to hear, “Well done! My good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with what I’ve given you. Come and share in my happiness!

Freedom In Christ - A New Creation - Paul Moore

We realize that as long as we are living in this world, there will be a continual struggle that we will face, and not until we die will we be free from the pull and temptation of sin. Paul gives a typical list of the type of activities that are associated with the sinful, fleshly, pre-conversion lifestyle. In Proverbs 6 there is also a list of what has been called “The Seven Deadly Sins”. The list continues for a total of 15 sin categories.

Sin is detrimental to the cause of Christ, and as such are associated with the former sinful life – and not the new creation life Christ came to give us. Yet we need to be aware and on guard on these so they do not creep back into our new Christian life and take us captive again. Too often some sins are so subtle that we might not even notice. The Bible talks that if we live in a habitual lifestyle of sin– and not necessarily those who are endeavoring to walk in the Spirit, but take a wrong step- the end result is plain – the penalty – not inheriting the kingdom of God.

The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, righteousness, and judgment – but He also doesn't leave us defenseless – there is another list that is available to the child of God, The Fruit of The Spirit. There are nine of these – and each one is empowered by the Spirit to help us live as a new creation and authentic freedom in life! Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-control!

“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.” Galatians 6:1 So, let’s embrace our Freedom In Christ!

Freedom In Christ - Life In The Spirit - Paul Moore

How has your diet of reading the Bible been for you? Are you feeding yourself with the truth, or are you feeding yourself on what the world has to offer? I think it is safe to say that if it is the truth that sets us free, then the opposite of truth binds us up – imprisons us – holds us captive

We are to daily find our strength and power by the Holy Spirit of God who lives within us. I love driving our car when the tank is full. I love living my life when I am full of the Holy Spirit. The phrase “be filled” could better be understood - “be being filled” - a continual process. Just like your car, the more you use it, the more you need to fill it. But unlike the gas for your car – there is an endless supply – and the price has already been paid by Christ. Power, life, truth, freedom – all offered by the indwelling presence of the Spirit of God. And as you walk in the Spirit, you will find your desires begin to change – from yourself to the things of God. Psalm 37:4 – 5 says “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him and he will do this.”

Unless we take the time to refuel, we will run out of gas. Our cars have warning lights when we are low onn fuel and so do our lives – lack of joy, peace, purpose. We become more focused on ourselves than on others. These are signs that we need to go back to the water of life and get refilled! Let’s make room for Him today! Revelation 22:17 - “The Spirit and the Bride say Come. And let the one who hears say Come. Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.”

Freedom In Christ - Sabrina Wiens

There is nothing I can do to make God love me more and there’s nothing I can do to make God love me less. God loves me. Period. And nothing I do will change that. There’s nothing I can do to make me more worthy of his love or somehow more deserving of it. God looks at me and loves me. All that I have to do is accept that. I was in my early 20s when this moment, this understanding of God’s love and grace hit me and when it dawned on me that I very much felt like it was my actions that were earning my salvation. That somewhere along the way, I had misunderstood God’s grace and that in my relationship with him, I had begun to think that the things I did for God were what made me worthy of his love. My understanding of being a Christian had very much started looking like a list of laws that I needed to follow. · Go to church · Read your Bible · Don’t swear · Don’t gossip · Don’t be mean to people In the end, as long as I’ve got more good deeds than bad, I’ll be okay, right? Wrong. This is exactly what the Apostle Paul is talking about here in the book of Galatians. If you start trying to earn your salvation through following rules, then what Christ did for you will be of no value at all. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery…you who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.” Galatians 5:1,4 Martin Luther called this a “passive righteousness” and he rightly admits that it’s a mystery that the world cannot understand. And I love that because isn’t that the truth? How can this be? How can God’s love for us not be dependant on our good actions and deeds towards him, but rather dependent solely on his actions towards us? It just doesn’t make sense. But when this finally sinks in and clicks it leads to tremendous peace and balance in the Christian life because you know that God’s love is faithful and true and your standing before God will not change, you’re free from focusing all your attention on following rules and earning your place in the kingdom and instead you can focus on knowing and loving this powerful and gracious, all-knowing God better and allowing him to do his work in your life and through your life. Exodus - God’s Dwelling Place - Sabrina Wiens

God no longer dwells with his people through tabernacles and temples. He became a living and breathing person who walked and talked and showed us how to worship and live the way he intended, paying the ultimate price to show us just how great his love is by taking the worst we could do to him. He took all of our sin upon himself to close that rift in the relationship that started way back in the garden.

And God has taken this one step further yet! If we accept the sacrifice that Christ made on our behalf then we too become God’s dwelling place. We receive the gift of the Holy Spirit – God living and moving in our own lives. 1 Corinthians 6:19 says that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit! And in Ephesians Paul points out that it’s no longer a physical building that God dwells in, but rather his church – us – the people who make up the church that God is building together to become his dwelling place!

Exodus - Show Me Your Glory - Paul Moore

When Moses asked God, 'show me your Glory' in Exodus 33:18, it reminds us today that when we cry out to see the glory of God, He says –look at my son- for He is the radiance of my Glory. Look at Jesus, for everything that you want to see in Me is reflected through Him. Through Jesus, we have access to the very presence of The Lord Almighty. Let’s seek His presence daily and be renewed by his grace!

The Holy Spirit is active and alive in the world today. When we pray, we aren’t just speaking words into the air, we are communing with the God of the universe who’s Spirit lives inside of us and who wants to speak and make himself known to us in a very real way.

The God who pursued his children and made himself known to them back then is pursuing his children – pursuing us still today so that he can be known. So that he can make us free – releasing us from the lies that have held us in captivity for so long, nurturing us like a mother eagle, bringing us close to his heart, treasuring us as his own, and making us into a kingdom of priests – each one having the right to stand before his holy present because of the lengths he went to bring us here.

Who is holding up your hands or whose hands are you holding up? There are so many times that we feel we have to do everything ourselves, but as part of the Christian community, we need to realize we are all in this together and there is a part everyone of us can play. Moses realized this as he was leading the people, and he needed men like Aaron and Hur to hold his hands up.

We are wandering in the desert right now. We are given a choice to trust in God, to follow after him, who no longer appears to us as a cloud, but as a man whose life we can know through The Bible, Jesus Christ. His life and his death, his resurrection and his ministry, are the culmination of God’s work in the world. He did not choose to destroy it, he did not forget about it. He sustains it and he works against the sinfulness of mankind to bring us and all creation back through redemption. That work was realized in Christ! Church, the challenge is as always to put God back to the first priority in our lives. Let's not let what we need and what we want physically get in the way of our spiritual health. God will provide for us what we need. So, let's put our energy and our emphasis into learning and doing the will of God, for our own sake and for those around us. Exodus - God Will Fight For You - Paul Moore

Paul Moore gives us the four instructions Moses gave to Israel just before God opened up the Red Sea. He told them to

1) Do not be afraid

2) Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord

3) God will fight for you

4) Hold your peace.

Too often we let our peace slip through our fingers, but we are instructed to hold onto it tightly and not let it go. We can rest assured that God will be there for us when we face each trial

Just before giving his life on the cross, Jesus explained to his disciples what the cross and resurrection would mean for them and for all of creation. He took the bread and the wine of the Passover – this 1,500-year old tradition that was used to remember and celebrate God protecting Israel through the blood of a lamb painted over their door posts that caused the Angel of Death to pass over their homes, allowing their firstborn to live, while so many others’ died and he gave it new meaning. This was an old, old tradition and one that every little Jewish boy and girl learned and what Jesus was saying here would have sounded crazy to the disciples. “Um, Jesus, what do you mean, this bread is your body and this cup is your blood? Don’t you know what Passover is about? It’s not about you and your body. It’s about what God did in Egypt.” But here Jesus is taking it and changing it – making it about himself and the new covenant of what he – the Holy One of Israel – the Messiah – The Lamb of God – is doing for them. Jesus is redefining what salvation for his people looks like. He’s saying, “We used to have a physical oppressor, in Egypt, that God delivered us from – but I’m doing something even more significant – through my suffering, I’m coming to bring freedom for all of humanity. This is the cup of the new covenant that my broken body and poured out blood will bring to you." Let's be encouraged to know that our God is alive and that in him and through him we have been redeemed and can come freely to the God who created us, knows us, and loves us. Exodus - You Will Know I Am the Lord - Sabrina Wiens

In this mesage, pastor Sabrina Wiens recounts the spiritual battle God fought through two ordinary servants, Moses and Aaron, noting that even in their old age they were used in powerful ways to show God’s power over all the gods of the Egyptians:

“It’s important for us to remember that our battle isn’t against flesh and blood. It wasn’t between flesh and blood back then, and it isn’t against flesh and blood for us today. When we see evil and injustice going on in our world – things that clearly go against God’s will – whether that’s governments, corporations, systems, or social movements – we need to remember that the battle isn’t against flesh and blood – against people, it’s against Satan and his hold.

We are kingdom people and our lives and our fight is all for the purpose of bringing God’s reign more fully into this world and that’s a spiritual battle we fight as we live out God’s call to be salt and light in this world.”

Our God wants to be known by his people and all of creation, but Pharaoh could not humble himself to acknowledge the God who sustains the whole earth. Sabrina concludes her message with an invitation to respond to God’s greatness and give him the praise he’s due. “Let’s not make the earth and rocks cry out, but lift our voices as we work towards knowing this God who breaks the chains of bondage and brings us freedom.”
