Luke 4:20-21 “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favour …” “Then,” Luke notes, “he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’”
Message inspired from Isaiah 61.

26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
The themes are purity in speech, love and care in our family, controlling ourselves and our language, and being God’s word of encouragement to others.

Key scripture: James 2:1-9 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favouritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, ‘Here’s a good seat for you,’ but say to the poor man, ‘You stand there’ or ‘Sit on the floor by my feet,’ 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6 But you have dishonoured the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong? 8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself,’[a] you are doing right. 9 But if you show favouritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as law-breakers.
1- God has chosen the poor to be rich in faith
2- God has given the royal law to be observed
3- God has determined mercy to be triumphant

Message inspired from James 1:9-12. Who does God say you are? Do you need to be lifted up and reminded that God has given you a high position? Or do you need him to bring you down, reminding you to put all of your trust in him. If you strip things back to just you and God, who does he say you are?

13 When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. 16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created. 19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent, and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
1- When tempted - don’t blame God
2- When tempted - do blame yourself
3- When tempted - do look up – then run

I want to give you a homework project. Do one thing as a result of today's message. It may be to commit to worship every Sunday in 2019. To start memorizing a Bible verse a week, start having a quiet time every day -- 5, 10, 15 minutes. Do something! Don't waste it. When you see the birds in the air after church – I want you to think about how you are making yourself good soil. And my prayer for you is that in 2019 God would do some incredible things in and through you.

Lord help us to have roots that go deep, to have an open mind to hear you and to take the time so that we don’t miss what you are trying to say to us. Part of the reason we celebrate the Lord’s supper each month is so that we stop and listen to what the Lord wants to say to us. In communion he tells us he loves us, he tells us he forgives us, and he tells us that as his children we are to go out into the world and share his love and forgiveness.
